Attempt to standardize Uyghur traditional clothing latest excessive intrusion into personal religious lives of Uyghurs

The Uyghur American Association (UAA) is concerned that a regional directive regarding the standardization of traditional Uyghur clothing is an excessive intrusion into the private lives and decisions of the Uyghur people in East Turkestan. UAA is troubled that this latest initiative by Chinese officials will label as suspicious those Uyghurs choosing to wear clothes not listed as “government approved.”

The Uyghur American Association (UAA) condemns the extrajudicial killing of 17-year-old Uyghur student Abdulbasit Ablimit by police in Kelpin county, Aksu prefecture. Ablimit was shot alongside two companions after an apparent traffic violation, and police allegedly beat and detained relatives of the victims and local Uyghurs who protested the killing.

Uyghur American Association urges Thai government not to return Uyghur refugees to China

More than 200 Uyghurs are being held at an immigration center near Thailand's southern city of Hat Yai's international airport after they were detained in a secret camp in a mountainous rubber plantation in Songkhla province on March 12.

The Uyghur American Association (UAA) is concerned about the fate of more than 200 Uyghur refugees currently detained in Hat Yai, southern Thailand. UAA calls on the Thai government to ensure the safety of the refugees by not returning them to China and by allowing the group access to UNHCR officials in order to process asylum claims.

The Uyghur American Association commends the U.S. State Department on the findings of its 2013 Annual Report of Human Rights Practices in China. The report is a damning indictment of the Chinese government’s human rights record not only towards the Uyghur people, but also people throughout China.
